Comicon sinks ship

For *research* purposes I'm trying to map out what happened with Swan Queen fandom. I'll post this to Tumblr when it's done, but who wants to TYPE there...

[tumblr.com profile] anursingdegreeinfeelings had the best archive of reblogs, I mostly went through that.

1. comments at the OUAT panel

My notes: I'm a bit incredulous at the tendency among "kids today" to want/expect/feel entitled to having subtext slash ships canonized. That said, I think there was a range of opinion within Swan Queen fandom, and people would mostly just expect to be treated respectfully.

Before the panel, calliopesmuse wrote:
You all know that the Swan Queen fandom will be totally pissed off tomorrow. We know it’s going to happen. They’re going to do something that makes us mad so just be prepared. Forewarned is forearmed, as they say. Oy, the next few days are going to be stressful on our fandom.

Asking the question in the first place seems warranted by the fact that, as ladysnarkbite reports:
Adam has said in the past that nobody has asked the questions at any of these things and that he’s not actively ignoring us. I’ve always thought that was a weak answer. How about we change that?

OK, here's a clip of the panel:

2. there is a lot of blowback on Twitter/Tumblr

Most of this is probably impossible to reconstruct, sigh. I imagine video wasn't available yet, so the comments were paraphrased on social media by people at the panel and then spread around. There was probably some misquoting (the oft-repeated statement that Swan Queen subtext was "unintentional" seems not to exist), and a lot of ill-informed @replies made in the heat of the moment.

3. the writers and cast respond badly

Honestly, the outrage could have been quickly defused if people in power hadn't acted all affronted and oppressed by the fact that fans were mad at them.

(note: he did not use the actual #noh8 tag as accused)

"I fully support relationships of all kinds. Heterosexual and homosexual. I am insulted that people read into banter in press situations and assume anything else."

always-la-belle-epoque points out that Lana Parilla simply retweeted these rather than answering.

As littlemissindecision puts it:
No, the reason I’m this angry is because of the way we’ve been treated. As fans, as queer women and as women entirely. Instead of acknowledging the connection that these two women have —through Henry and all the similarities in their life— they decided to paint one of the most loyal and passionate factions of their fandom as delusional.

Similar sentiments from wistfulwatcher.

eshusplayground offered "things the OUAT panel could have said other than what they did" (bonus Mary McDonnell comparison)

4. aftermath: backlash

always-la-belle-epoque wrote an open letter to Swan Queen LBGTQ shippers -- I personally find it a bit over-the-top, but the anger is valid:
Many of us are part of a community that has been silenced our whole lives. We are told by society, or innately sense, that discussing matters of queerness can get us hurt. When we do speak up to those who have the power to change the rules, we are told it is not within our rights to experience a love story as legitimate as any heterosexual relationship out there. This reinforces the expectation of silence. It sets us back.

worncoats:
Expressing anger, disappointment, and frustration at the heterosexist narrative that is being constructed by OUAT’s writers should not have been vilified into: entitled fans throw tantrum because their ship was sunk.

The incident was extensively discussed in the OUAT panel at FemslashCon, coincidentally scheduled for July 21.

REBLOG IF YOU WILL NOT BE TUNING IN FOR THE SEASON 3 PREMIERE OF OUAT. (288 notes)

5. aftermath: affirmations

Fun with the tension between authorial intent and subtext: anursingdegreeinfeelings gifset

I’m not disappointed there is no Swan Queen Canon on the TV show. I won’t be disappointed if they never go there. Because we have you. They could never do it as well as you do. And they’d probably muff it up like they’ve done with every other story line on the show. You are the Swan Queen Ship. You are the Swan Queen heart. You are my Once Upon a Time.

calliopesmuse proposed a virtual season

Amazing and detailed prompts for a video campaign (as far as I can tell this isn't going forward).

Reblog if you still ship Swan Queen because you don’t need no canon. (806 notes)

6. in conclusion

I still hate Tumblr! OMG it is the WORST archive ever conceived.

ETA: A trollish but predictable article (or blog post? somewhere in between): When shipping goes too far.
